National Survivors Foundation urges Australian Government to adopt recommendations in full.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
National Survivors Foundation Welcomes Recommendations to Strengthen and Extend the National Redress Scheme
The National Survivors Foundation (NSF) welcomes the recommendations of the Joint Standing Committee on the National Redress Scheme.
This report recognises the importance of ensuring Survivors can continue to access redress, support and recognition for the harm they have experienced.
NSF thanks the Committee for its ongoing work and commitment to examining the Scheme and identifying opportunities to strengthen its operation.
The recommendations represent an important opportunity for governments across Australia to demonstrate their commitment to Survivors and provide much-needed certainty for those seeking access to redress.
NSF anticipates that more than 100,000 people will access the Scheme, and it is vital that those who need access to redress have the opportunity to do so.
To achieve this, the Scheme must remain available and adequately resourced to meet the needs of Survivors moving forward.
Clare Leaney, CEO of the National Survivors Foundation, said the report provided an important opportunity for governments to demonstrate their commitment to Survivors.
“This report shows that our Parliament is committed to supporting Survivors, and that governments of all persuasions across the country now have the opportunity to provide assurance to those seeking access to justice.”
“By extending the Scheme and ensuring support services are appropriately resourced, Survivors can continue to access the care, recognition and justice they deserve.”
The National Survivors Foundation looks forward to continuing to work with governments, decision-makers and sector partners to strengthen the National Redress Scheme, and advocate for outcomes that reflect the needs and experiences of Survivors.
NSF encourages the Australian Government to adopt the recommendations in full.
